Our practice is dedicated to training new midwives, so that more women in Ontario can have access to midwifery care.

There are almost always students being mentored in our practice. Your midwifery team may involve a student, with your consent. There are many advantages to having a student midwife as part of your team. Our students are enthusiastic and eager to learn. They are dedicated to learning the midwifery profession and enhancing their clients' birthing experiences. They also provide an extra set of hands in labour to give labour support!

Students always work closely with midwives, and have a vast range of clinical skills, depending on their stage in training. Our practice supervises students at all stages of the midwifery education program, from introductory level (first clinical placement) to clerkship (end of training, similar to residency).

Monique Dupuy (working alongside Amy and Anna)

My name is Monique Dupuy, and I am a fourth year Midwifery student at Ryerson University.
I decided to pursue midwifery after years of working as a counsellor. After the birth of my son, I developed a passion for postpartum care, and I came to appreciate the role of midwives in continuously supporting families through the unique transitions of parenthood.

I have completed clinical rotations at North York General, Sunnybrook, Women’s College and St Michael’s Hospitals in Toronto, as well as the Alongside Midwifery Unit at Markham-Stouffville Hospital. As a second year student, I worked with the team at Uptown Midwives & Family Wellness in North York.

I live in Etobicoke with my son (who is now ten), and we spend our time cracking jokes, talking about dinosaurs, and visiting our family back in Nova Scotia whenever we can.

I’m excited to join East Mississauga Midwives for my final year of study, and I look forward to learning all I can from the midwives and the families in their care.

I am currently a midwifery student in my final year at Ryerson University and I am so excited to be doing a year-long placement at East Mississauga Midwives. I have been passionate about birth and reproductive justice since taking a women’s studies course with a midwife in my undergrad, and I am so humbled and
honoured to be able to join you for part of your journey (and to have you join me for part of mine!) Before I did this, I did my BA at Carleton in English Literature and Women’s Studies, and my MA in Immigration and Settlement Studies at Ryerson—my research focused on how midwives in Ontario provided care to
uninsured immigrant women. Places I call home include: Guelph, Ottawa, Sri Lanka, and Toronto. In my free time, I enjoy playing with other people’s cats, baking, and participating in various forms of competitive trivia.

Maria McKeown (working alongside Daina and Ashley)

My name is Maria, and I am a midwifery student in my second year at Ryerson University. I fell in love with midwifery with the birth of my daughter in 2017, and have since chosen to follow in my great-grandmother’s footsteps in becoming a midwife.

Prior to beginning my midwifery journey, I completed a Bachelor of Arts in visual arts, and Bachelor of Education from York University. In my spare time, you could find me painting, reading, practicing yoga, or chasing after my rambunctious toddler. I am both humbled and graciously honoured to be apart of your family’s pregnancy and birth experience.
