East Mississauga Midwives is funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care. Our practice has a special focus of working with pregnant people in difficult life situations, including new immigrants and refugees, those fleeing abusive relationships, teens, or others with social issues that affect their lives and the lives of their babies. We have committed to saving spots for these clients. Midwifery care is free in Ontario, even if you do not have an Ontario health card.
Midwives are experts in the provision of primary care for our clients anticipating normal, low-risk pregnancy and birth.
We view pregnancy and childbirth as a profound time in a your life, with a variety of personal and cultural meanings.
Clients can call their midwives 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with urgent concerns

Birth
Midwives are trained in normal, low-risk birth. They are also trained in emergency skills.
We view pregnancy and childbirth as a healthy time in your life, and expect your birth to proceed normally. Midwives monitor both you and your baby closely during birth.
The midwives who have been providing care during your pregnancy will provide care during your birth. All midwives in Ontario are trained in both hospital birth and home birth.
We have admitting privileges at Trillium Health Partners - Mississauga Site. We have excellent relationships with the highly skilled obstetricians, pediatricians and nurses at the hospital and will consult with them if problems arise. With the help of their midwives, our clients decide whether to have their babies at Trillium or at home.

Postpartum
Midwives provide care to you and your baby for six weeks after the birth. This is called postpartum care.
You will see the same midwives who provided care to you during pregnancy and your birth.
Clients will have about six midwifery appointments during the six weeks following the birth, including several in the first week.
We monitor the health of you and your baby and provide breastfeeding support. We ensure you're recovering well, both physically and emotionally. Midwives provide physical examinations of the baby, including checking:
weight
length
heart
lungs
healing of umbilical stump
hearing
overall physical development
Midwives remain available by pager 24 hours a day, every day.
After six weeks, clients are discharged from midwifery care and will see their family doctor or pediatrician for care.
